3/6 Roster Highlights By: 2K Insider | Friday March 06 2009 Latest News - March 1st was the last day that players could be released from their teams and still be eligible to sign with another squad. So that day saw several players get bought out of their current contracts and/or waived so that they could join a playoff bound team. Joe Smith reached a buyout agreement with Oklahoma City, which piqued interest in several teams. However, there was little doubt where he would end up. Smith played with the Cavaliers last season and wants another shot at beating Boston in the playoffs after losing a tough 7 game series. With Ben Wallace out with a broken leg, he will provide veteran leadership and depth in their depleted front court. Recently traded from Chicago to Sacramento, Drew Gooden reached a buyout agreement which eventually saw him sign with San Antonio this week. Like Smith, Gooden was sought after by several playoff teams because of his ability to rebound and score down low. The Spurs are Gooden's 6th team in 7 years, but this could be his best chance at winning a title. Luther Head was waived by the Rockets and quickly signed with the Heat who are in need of guard depth. A key criteria for Head was guaranteed playing time which apparently the Heat are willing provide. With Chris Quinn falling out of the rotation, Wade had become the backup point guard to rookie Mario Chalmers. Since Miami prefers to keep Wade at the off guard, Head should be a nice fit as a spot up 3 point shooter to Wade's drives ala Damon Jones circa 2004-05. Stromile Swift signed with the Suns after being waived by the Nets. Phoenix is desperately trying to make the playoffs without All-Star forward Amare Stoudemire who is out for the remainder of the season. The Suns have to win now with their current roster of aging veterans like Shaq, Nash and Grant Hill. The Nuggets, wanting another point guard for insurance, signed Jason Hart off waivers while the Rockets called-up James "Flight" White from the D-League. Recall that White won an NBA championship with the Spurs in his rookie season.
Biggest Movers - Having his best season in 3 years, 37 year old Shaquille O'Neal has seen his ratings slowly increase since November. After winning a championship in 2006 with Miami, his numbers declined steadily and many critics assumed we had seen the best of O'Neal. However, this season we have witnessed a rejuvenated Shaq dominate the paint once again, thanks in large part to the Phoenix trainers and medical staff who also have worked wonders for Grant Hill. While the Golden State Warriors have had a season they would like to soon forget, Stephen Jackson had a month of February he would like to remember. In 10 games, Jax averaged 27.3 points, 8.1 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 2.1 steals and shot 0.473 from the field. Those numbers compare favorably to any player in the NBA, including MVP candidate Dwyane Wade who averaged 30.9 points, 8.7 assists, 4.8 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 0.502 FG% in February. I salute you, Captain Jack. Another player who may be flying under most fans' radars is Jeff Green of the Thunder. In 12 games last month, Green averaged 20.5 points 9.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 41.1 minutes. Unless you've been paying attention, which most blog regulars are, it's easy to lose Jeff Green in Kevin Durant's shadow. We can only imagine what a lineup of Westbrook, Durant, Green and Chandler could have done in the coming years. Atlanta's Al Horford has found his groove again after missing 12 games with a bruised knee. In his last 5 games, he has averaged 17.6 points, 12.8 rebounds, 1.6 blocks and 0.552 FG%.
Animation Packages - Deron Williams now has a new isomotion package while Kobe Bryant has a new dunk package.

Caron Butler has struggled out the gate averaging 16.8 ppg on 0.397 FG% over 8 games. Perhaps he won't struggle as much when Antawn Jamison finally returns to the lineup.

Los Angeles Lakers - Andrew Bynum
Andrew Bynum is holding it down in the middle for the Lakers with 20.3 ppg, 11.8 rpg and 1.8 bpg averages. It's nice to finally see the young big man healthy and productive after some unfortunate injuries in recent years.

New York Knicks - Toney Douglas
Toney Douglas has provided the Knicks with bench scoring over the last few games. No doubt Mike D'Antoni is frustrated with Chris Duhon's lack of scoring this year.
